Science on the Mall

Spectacular October weather in Washington, D.C., provided a perfect setting for the inaugural USA Science & Engineering Festival on the National Mall and nearby venues over the past weekend (Oct. 23 and 24). Thousands of people thronged the hundreds of exhibits set up by federal and state agencies with a science component to their mission, nonprofit organizations like the American Chemical Society, companies, and universities. Some exhibits were informational; many others featured hands on activities mainly geared toward young people. All were designed to demonstrate the excitement of science and engineering. From the time I spent wandering though the festival, it was a tremendous success. Lines formed for many of the exhibits. C&EN will publish a report on the festival in its Nov. 8 issue.
