Joseph Priestley House Temporarily Closed

In all the ACS Meeting rush, I missed this news item- as of 3 PM Friday, August 14, 2009, the Joseph Priestley House Museum was closed until further notice. It looks as though the state's budget impasse, which we covered in C&EN's print edition as well as on our blog, has yet to be resolved. A plan is in the works to operate the site with limited hours, but has not yet been approved. Hat tip: Dr. Sliderule

  1. While the Priestley House is recognized on the National Register of Historical Places, it is considered, by some, to be a true National Treasure. The closing of the Priestley House last week is an immeasurable loss for our National Heritage. Please contact your congressional representatives to have them consider converting the Priestley House into a National Historic Site as part of the National Park Service so that it may be properly preserved and reopened to the public once again. Please see my blog for up to date information on this subject.
