It’s really just silly the amount of press attention this “watermelon a natural Viagra” story has got this week, given that the compound being touted as a fleshy red version of the little blue tablets, citrulline, is metabolised to the bog-standard amino acid, arginine. It’s arginine that’s supposed to release NO and cause blood vessel relaxation, but the researchers involved explicity state that it’s nowhere near as organ specific as Viagra, either way. I’ve grumped about this over on Spinneret in a 4th July special.
